“Understand and appreciate Bonsai”

The Kawabe School is mainly based on two distinct axis.

The fist one involves a series of projects initiated by Takeo Kawabe himself. They are intended to show what techniques can possibly be applied to bonsai trees and to explain the necessary waiting periods between steps.

This is more convenient than to rely on student's projects, as Kawabe can prepare the successive interventions a few days in advance, thus avoiding wasting time during the courses.

Needless to say that the health of the trees is ALWAYS privileged and that the next step will only be executed if a tree is ready for it.

The second axis is based on the group discussion about the interventions to be done on the student's trees.

Although each student works exclusively on his own material, this approach allows each person to learn from several dozens of trees, each with a different character and potential, asking for specific styling, techniques and care in order to achieve this goal.

As always, the successive steps are planned in function of the tree's health and capacity to stand the planned interventions without danger.

Sometimes this approach asks for changing plans, first making certain that vigorous growth of foliage and roots is available before applying the next styling technique.

To our European mind, this may seem a very long and cumbersome process used as we are to shortcuts, but students soon discover that this often proves to be the most easy and shortest way to top class bonsai.

Kawabe School

“Bonsai leren begrijpen en waarderen”

De Kawabe school berust op twee veschillende basislijnen.

De eerste bestaat uit een aantal projecten die door Takeo Kawabe persoonlijk zijn opgestart. Zij dienen om de technieken te verduidelijken die bij de opbouw van bonsai kunnen toegepast worden, evenals de noodzaak om tussen elke stap voldoende rustperiodes in te bouwen.

Dit werkt doeltreffender dan enkel op door de studenten zelf opgestarte projecten te rekenen, daar Kawabe de projecten een paar dagen op voorhand kan voorbereiden en aldus tijdverspillen tijdens de lessen wordt vermeden. Vanzelfsprekend krijgt de gezondheid van de bomen ALTIJD voorrang: de volgende stap zal pas worden gezet als de boom daar rijp voor is.

De tweede lijn is gebaseerd op de groepsdiscussie van de uit te voeren werken op de projecten van de student.

Hoewel iedere student exclusief op zijn eigen bomen werkt, laat dit eenieder toe om te leren van verscheidene tientallen bomen, elk met hun eigen karakter, potentieël en specifieke eisen in verband met stijling, technieken en zorgen.

Zoals altijd worden de vollgende stappen gepland in functie van de gezondheid van de boom en zijn vermogen om de ingreep zonder risico te doorstaan. Dat vraagt soms uitstel van plannen, tot bijvoorbeeld loof of wortels voldoende sterkte vertonen alvorens verder te gaan.

Voor onze Europese denkwijze kan dit een lange en saaie omweg lijken, gewend als we zijn altijd een kortere weg te kiezen. Maar de studenten merken al gauw dat de gekozen methode de snelste en gemakkelijkste manier is om bomen van wereldniveau te produceren.

Ecole Kawabe

“Apprendre à comprendre et apprécier le Bonsaï”

L'école Kawabe est essentiellement basée sur deux axes.

Le premier met en œuvre une série de projets initiés par Takeo Kawabe lui-même. Ils illustrent les techniques qu'il est possible d'utiliser pour arriver aux résultats escomptés, mais aussi les temps de repos entre deux interventions, indispensables pour préserver la santé des arbres.

Cette approche est plus efficace que de se baser uniquement sur les arbres des étudiants, puisque Kawabe peut préparer ces exemples avant les cours, évitant les pertes de temps pendant les leçons. Il va de soi que la santé des arbres est TOUJOURS privilégiée, et qu'une étape de développement suivante ne sera entamée que si l'arbre est prêt à l'affronter.

Le second axe est base sur la discussion en groupe des interventions requises sur chaque arbre des étudiants.

Bien que chacun travaille exclusivement sur ses propres arbres, cette approche permet à chacun de profiter des explications et de l'évolution de plusieurs douzaines d'arbres, ayant chacun son propre caractère et nécessitant des actes et des soins spécifiques pour arriver au but.

Comme toujours, les interventions successives sont planifiées en fonction de la santé des arbres et de leur faculté de les supporter sans risques.

Ce cheminement demande parfois des changements dans les plans initiaux: Il faut d'abord que le feuillage es les racines soient développées suffisamment avant d'appliquer la technique suivante.

Notre esprit Européen perçoit cela parfois comme un processus très long et frustrant, habitués que nous sommes à prendre des raccourcis..

Mais les étudiants découvrent bien vite que cette approche représente le chemin le plus rapide et le plus facile pour produire des bonsaïs du plus haut niveau mondial.
